Revell takes first step to Blues return
Exclusive By Chris Phillips

SOUTHEND United striker Alex Revell returned for the Shrimpers reserves in yesterday's 2-2 draw with Norwich City - but is not yet ready to figure for the first team.

The 24-year-old played the second half at Roots Hall after recovering from the hernia operation which left him sidelined for more than four weeks.

But he knows he cannot afford to rush back into Steve Tilson's plans.

"It's going to take time and I have to be patient," said Revell, who joined Blues from Brighton and Hove Albion during the January transfer window.

"A lot of what's going on is in my head because this is the second hernia I've had and I'm the type of person who reads too much into things.

"I shouldn't be like that and I will get there in the end. I've only had two days back in training so to get 45 minutes in for the reserves already is a bonus.

"There is still a lot of hard work ahead though and I'm going to be staying behind for extra work after training too."

Revell is desperate to figure against his former side Brighton at Roots Hall in a fortnight's time.

But even that may be unlikely.

"There is no need to rush back because the team is doing well," said Revell.

"I shall talk to the manager and the medical staff and we shall decide when I'm ready. The type of person that I am, I want it to be as soon as possible but I'm going to have to be sensible about it."

Revell was unable to help the second string secure a victory though, despite Dean Austin's side racing into a 2-0 lead.

A penalty from Lee Barnard and a close range finish from Charlie MacDonald put Southend on course for the win.

The hosts were in full control with MacDonald having another effort cleared off the line and Barnard striking the outside of the left post from just inside the penalty area.

Matt Harrold then wasted a glorious chance to make it 3-0 and the missed opportunity came back to haunt Blues as the Canaries flew back to grab a point, with Bally Smart scoring twice.

The winger pulled one back for his side in the 66th minute and, just three minutes later, the South African youngster made it 2-2 with a neat finish from close range.

Southend: Collis, Hunt, Hopkins (Byrne 86) , Liptak, Herd, Scannell, Moussa, Grant, Harrold, C MacDonald, Barnard (Revell 46). Subs not used: N McDonald, O'Keefe and Harvey.

How good would it be, to see Mr Capello trying to fit a selection of Southend United players into his England starting line up!!
