'Make County Hall give us third road'
CASTLE Point MP Bob Spink has urged the Prime Minister to press county councillors for urgent action on Canvey's third access road.
At Prime Minister's Questions in the Commons yesterday former Tory MP Dr Spink - now sitting as an independent - asked Gordon Brown to press County Hall to make the Canvey route its top priority.
He said a road from a different point on the island was needed for environmental, regeneration and safety reasons.
Dr Spink asked the PM: "Will he join me in pressing Essex County Council, which is Conservative-controlled, to make this its top priority? If it does, we will get the access road we need.
"If it doesn't, the people will know who to blame."
Mr Brown replied the Government had increased spending on roads nationwide.
He said: "It is the responsibility of Essex County Council to bring forward a scheme which provides value for money and meets environmental objectives.
"I know Essex County Council is neither of his party nor ours. I hope, however, it will listen to his representations."
Ray Howard, Tory county councillor for Canvey West, said a third road would cost about £100million and need Government funding. He urged Dr Spink to continue to lobby in Parliament for the money.
He promised: "I will fight any corner to get Canvey another access road, but in the meantime I'm working hard at County Hall to try and get improvements to Canvey Way.
"I do believe for the MP to state it's Essex County Council's responsibility to build an additional access road to Canvey is not the case. It would have to come through the local transport plan, which is the Government strategy.
"He should be making more noises to the Government, particularly the Department for Transport, because Essex County Council cannot afford to pay for the access road."

As if the Government are going to spend £100,000,000 so that a couple of thousand people can drive their cars off the island at rush hour.
Bog-dwellers really should get a sense of perspective.

He's going for the Canvey vote then. It's finding issues off the Island that's the tough one. I know. Build around The Chase, Burches and The Common. That'll stop them having to build so many more new houses on Canvey. Stick that in your manifesto Bob.

Did Not take long for the independant member to start abusing the Tory County council. Just wish he would tell the truth. he is fully aware that the responsibility for building an alternative access for Canvey Island is a Government decision and not a local or County funding issue. use your position in parliament to attack the refusal of government to fund this much needed road and stop implying false information to the public so that you look as if you are the only one working for this road.
Ray Howard and I have been continually and publicly working for the road to the manorway since before you arrived here from Dorset.

Makes a change from independents having their members interfered with by tory councillors.

It looks like "Bandwaggon Bob" is living up to his name. Perhaps if he did not pay £,000s to his ex wife, daughter and lovers daughter out of public funds, and stopped claiming £22,000 for a London house (just 30 miles from his main house), there would be more public money left for road schemes such as this.

Happy - please, please let us know which member of the Conservative Party refers to Canvey Islanders as 'bog dwellers'.
It's entirely true that the council would need government cash to build a third road. However, as a first step to getting the cash, the council has to prioritize it and actually ASK the government for the money.
I would guess the reason Essex CC hasn't done so is because they want government money to be used in other directions.

Dear Dave.
If I was a member of the Conservative party I would answer that for you. But I cannot.
What I can do, however, is refer you to the well known local author Bernard Cornwell and his books about the Danes and Uhtred in 890AD.
In one of the books he refers to the bogs and marshes of Canvey (he also mentions two tree island)and it's fractious uncouth, uncivilised, dwellers who live sad, pitiful, short and brutish lives.
Benfleet is regarded as an earthly paradise in comparison.
Southend, I'm afraid, doesn't get a mention but I'm sure that doesn't surprise you.

ory.com : "There are many men today who might claim that one wife is certainly enough for any man in his right senses. But it was not so long ago that men on Canvey were reported to have many wives during their lifetime. Numbers ranging from 14 and 15 to as many as 35 have been mentiond as commonplace for the time. The answer to this remarkable fact appears to be found in the great sickness found in Canvey. A form of malaria, the intermittent fever appeared to be the cause of early death among the female population. It is not clear, however, why more women than men were struck down. Perhaps the menial tasks and long hours of the age helped the fever to overcome the victim, but it was not dwelt on by the spouse who might even have argued that variety be the spice of life, and readily set to the mainland to fetch another.
The author, Daniel Defoe, writing in the 18th century, made reference to Canvey (Candy Island) and its fever, saying that he frequently met with men who had taken repeatedly and in quick succession a huge number of brides.
The unhealthy atmosphere of the marshlands, with its dampness and fog, was blamed for the change in complexion of the womenfolk (those born on the island were thought to be immune), and seldom did they live for more than a year in the new surroundings.
Advice to stay away from stagnant water and marshland areas was given to sufferers but this was a little late in the day for those taken from their wholesome fresh air in the uplands and brought to a markedly different terrain." Looks like they've been campaigning for centuries to get off as fast as possible !
A form of malaria, the intermittent fever appeared to be the cause of early death among the female population.
It was also known as the Ague or the "Essex Disease".
I know of one councillor (who is a Tory) suggesting that if the RSPB do flood part of its 800 acres in western Canvey then this may create the "stagnant" water that is necessary for the anopheles mosquito to breed, and with global warming plus the spread of warm climate insects, we could see the re-introduction of malaria in Canvey.
And not a moment too soon.

When I was growing up on Canvey a bull-dozer came through our field one day. Next day some bloke from the council came along and put a street sign up. Me and me brothers didn't know what it was. But we took it round the scrap mans anyway and he gave us a tanner for it. Next day it was back up and we was told not to touch it again. It made a good goalpost anyway.

Another acess road. You must be joking! There are already 2 too many! If people choose to live on Canvey they should stay there, but instead they all want to leave the Island every day causing traffic chaos in the neighbouring towns, then have the audacity to demand better and faster ways to accomplish this. Any new road should be a private funded toll road. Let the Canvey residents pay for it if they want it.

Perhaps he would be most kind and give his real name ? Oh no that would mean he could not be so rude in future. oh and Gail is the spelling.
