Going for goal
 |
| Peter Clarke |
PETER Clarke is out to break his Roots Hall scoring duck when Southend United host League One play-off rivals Walsall on Saturday.
The centre-back has scored six goals in 91 games since joining Blues from Blackpool at the start of last season.
But all of those strikes have come away from home and Clarke is determined to finally hit the back of the net at Roots Hall.
"I just don't seem to be able to score at home," said the 26-year-old.
"I think I've done everything but score in all honesty - I've hit the post, had one cleared off the line and came close a few times in our last home match against Swansea but it just wouldn't go in for me.
"Hopefully that will change against Walsall but, in truth, it doesn't matter who scores as long as we go out and get another three points."
Clarke opened the scoring when Southend triumphed 2-0 away at Walsall in October and he is desperate to complete a double over the Saddlers as his fifth-placed side look to cement their place in the play-offs.
"It's another big game for us because Walsall are just a couple of places below us in the table and will be wanting to close the gap in a bid to boost their own chances," said the former England youth international.
"We know that they are a well organised team who have been on a great run since we beat them but we're in form now and can't wait for each game to arrive."
Blues have now not lost in eight matches with their latest triumph coming at Swindon Town on Monday.
Right back Simon Francis grabbed the only goal of the game but Clarke also played a crucial part in the 1-0 by somehow clearing a late Billy Paynter shot off the goal-line.
"It was just a knee-jerk reaction and thankfully I managed to keep it out," he said.
>BLUES boss Steve Tilson may add to his squad before the transfer window closes at 5pm this afternoon.
The manager is keen to add to his attacking options.
"There maybe a chance of bringing in a striker who can also play wide," confirmed Tilson, who declined to name the player he is targeting.
"I'm waiting to hear what happens but it would be nice to get him in."

In the report above, Clark is quoted as saying 'he has trouble scoring at home', sorry to he this Clarkie, hope this domestic trouble does not effect your football!!
I'm sure if Mr Capello ask's Tilly nicely, i'm sure he'll release Bailey, McCorrack and Kanu to make England a more entertianing and attacking team.
Good to see Super Freddy still firing them in for Wales last night, Mr McCarthy take note !!

Clarke could have got a couple at Swansea.
Why is Tilson obsessed with wide men that can play up front. How about breaking the mould and going for an out and out forward that will score a goal every two to three games. There is a bloke at Hereford that has scored 7 goals in 13 games. He might be worth a punt.

actually tillys after a player who plays upfront but can also play wide, theres a difference. also im glad to see hooper doing well but hes on loan, hes scored a few but its not as if hes setting the world alight. how would u feel if our loanees left just cause they are doing well.

Why is everyone obsessed by Hoops? He can't (yet) score enough goals, and in any case, we are scoring enough with Barnard, Robson-Jerome and the mighty Ginga Ninja. We don't need Hoops, who can't score for us and gives the ball away far far too easily. Leave him in nearly Wales to mature.
I think Tilson should look for a big bloke for the back who can also defend, rather than this super winger-****-striker. I think we had one of those before in Foran, and have a better one now in HR-K. Perhaps it's a Tilly red Herring, as he closes in on Alex from Chelski.

Good to see Hopper doing well, but at this point in time i don't think he is at the standard we need.
Bearing in mind he was seen at the Hall a couple of weeks ago, could it be . . . . . Super Freddy???
Who ever the potential canditade, trust in Tilly & Brush

Freddy was most likely at Roots Hall because wolves weren't playing that day. I didn't here anything about that until after the game. If he was there I'm sure he would have got a clap and a cheer as Jol did when he turned up for the game against Carlisle. I saw him getting out of his car with Chris Hughton in tow.
Anyway Coventry have been trying to sign him and Freddy was ready to go.

Surely we all want to see Clarke etc concentrating 100% on no goals in our net especially at set pieces and corners, when so often we supporters hold our breath ?Isn't that what we want of him first and foremost. Concentrate please !

A scoring rate of better than one in every two games is up there with the best of them. Hooper is leading the attack in a club going for promotion and keeping ex prem striker Trevor Benjamin on the bench. He must be doing something right.
