Penalty row match to be replayed
CATHOLIC United Minors and Corringham Athletic have been ordered to replay their Essex Under 12 Cup semi-final by the Football Association following a controversial penalty shoot-out.
Catholic triumphed in the original meeting between the two teams at the start of the month.
But, following Corringham's protest at the retaking of their third penalty the tie will be replayed this weekend.
Having scored the original spot-kick, the Athletic player was ordered to re-take it and missed.
Contoversy then arose over the referee's reason for disallowing the player's first effort, leading to the club protesting to the Essex Football Association.
The Essex FA turned down the club's initial appeal, but then reversed their own decision following direction from the national FA.
"The match has been declared void," the Essex FA - who turned down Corringham's first appeal - told the Echo.
"Following a protest made to the Football Association by Corringham Athletic, who lost after a penalty shoot-out in the last four tie, the Essex County Football Association has revised its decision regarding the initial protest made just after the match.
"This pertained to the decision of the referee for the team's third penalty kick of the shoot-out to be re-taken.
Committee of the Cups and Competitions Committee that the result of the above match should stand has been overturned following the advice of the Football Association.
"It was advised the match officials were incorrect in their interpretation of the Laws of the Game. In the interests of football, the semi-final match will, therefore, be replayed."
But the verdict has upset Catholic United and Paul Gevaux, one of the player's parents, has hit out at the verdict.
"It's sending out the wrong message to young players and is telling them that the referee can be wrong and can overturn decisions," he said.
"When I was playing football or rugby, I was told to respect the referee and that his decision was final, but what does this show?
"I can remember this happening only once in any form of football and that was when Arsenal replayed a match with Sheffield United a few years ago when they didn't throw the ball back after an opposing player had been injured.
"But the team did that, not the ref and it's just all very odd and in my opinion it's because we are a small team playing in a small league and they don't care about us."

Reading this article and being a Referee myself, I think that the FA have got this one completely wrong. My feeling is that the game should STAND and the Referee should be re-tested as this is one of the simplest things to get right, I agree that the goal should have stood but mistakes happen, are all games that the Referee make a mistake going to be replayed ( I THINK NOT ) This also sounds to me like sour grapes from Corringham Athletic, on losing to a so called smaller side. Further more, spare a thought for the 12 year old boys from Catholic Utd, already in the Final then it's taken away by the already incompitent National FA. Bad form on their part.

Corringham Athletic, should be ashamed of themselves. How petty can you get. This is a kid's football match, and they are treating it like the world cup. Imagine how the lad's from Catholic feel. I hope they stuff you good and proper in the replay. You don;t deserve to win. The worst thing is, is that it has nothing to do with the kids, but some overbearing parent. And how does your child feel?. That's if he even knows anything about it. Probably done behind his back.

The team should be disgusted with themsselves, in fact everyone involved in this sorry saga should be disgusted with themselves. How can the F.A. change a decision honestly made, whether correctly or not, unless there is clear sign of bias to the team benefitting from it.
This is absolutely disgraceful, and goes to show that the people running the game in England are a load of old duffers who should be put out to grass.
When it comes to Law application/ suggestions for Law changes etc it should be done by ex referees who have recently retired and who know the modern game at the top level. most F.A. officials are so out of date they want retiring, in fact some should have been put out to grass along time ago.
Law changes should be tried by the people who actually have to apply them, not some geriatric in Zurich. Mike t

What sort of signal are the FA giving to the kids here? are they saying that if you keep arguing the decision then you will get a replay? in a week where we have seen the Cole incident and the Mascherano incident the last thing we want our kids to do is argue over every decision, because the first person the kids will argue with is the ref, once again the FA are letting everyone down, especially the kids.

A very unfortunate situation, but remember there are always 2 sides to every story. Maybe we should hear Corringham have to say before judgments are made

Some comments being made, i feel are quite harsh, there has obviously been a mistake on the re-taken penalty incident, we don't know the full facts, so having a go at the team involved are injustified,it seems to me if you are going to react with vindictive thoughts, perhaps you are treating it like the F.A Cup.

I feel the game needs to be played again, we keep hearing about how do catholic boys feel, but how would they feel if the decision was against them, fairs fair, if catholic are the better side then they should go through with no help from the ref, lay off with comments against corringham , or have we fogotten they are children!

Cup replay result Corringham 2 v 3 Catholic (AET)
Full compliment of County Officials plus Head of Referees in attendance and they have had their prayers answered.
Fair play to Corringham who pre match still insisted they were not looking for a replay only an apology and the instruction came from Essex FA via Soho Square to replay the game.
Fixture went one nil to Athletic, late second half equaliser from a Catholic free kick. Catholic went ahead second period of extra time with a near post header, then three one late on. With Corringham's late late second goal from a free kick County officials must have all been squirming as the chance of another shoot out loomed.
But they get their get out of jail and Catholic get their final. The whole charade still remains reflects very badly on the County officials and you would hope that the very least both clubs will receive written apologies and a full explanation of this very curious decision.
The game was played in fantastic spirit by both sets of players, the referee and his assistants were first class. The game was an excellent advert for youth football. Not only were we happy with the result the best team on the day won.
Well done Catholic go ahead and enjoy your day.
By the way don't know if anybody is aware the final would have been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Stanway today, how ironic is that.
Let the Essex FA hang their heads in shame and maybe next time they will treat the little clubs with a little more respect and not bury their heads in the sand. Colchester, Southend or indeed West Ham would not have been dealt with in this manner so why Catholic, Corringham and Boca. Think on you people in the Essex FA and don't let this happen again.
