Thorpe and Rayleigh split the title honours

THORPE Bay proved two out of three is not bad by taking two titles as the Leigh and Westcliff LTA winter league came to an end.

The Thorpe Bay Gardens club triumphed in the ladies' and mixed leagues, although they were unable to stop Rayleigh claiming the men's title.

Thorpe's ladies won Division One by five points from Kent Elms, the same margin that their mixed team won Division One by.

Rayleigh pipped Leigh to the Men's Division One crown by two points after the two clubs finished well ahead of their rivals.

Most of the promotion and relegation issues were straightforward.

But there were the usual instances where the league rules decided the constitution for next winter's leagues.

No team was promoted from Men's Division Three because both champions Thorpe Bay III and runners-up Kent Elms II were league-locked by their second and first strings respectively playing in Division Two. That meant Westcliff Hard II escaped relegation.

Rayleigh II were promoted from Men's Division Four because champions Thorpe Bay IV were league-locked by thier third team.

Westcliff Lawn finished second in Mixed Division Two but go up to the top flight as Thorpe Bay II's first string already play in Division One, where they finished as champions this season.

The league-locking in Division Two had a knock-on effect for Thorpe's third team, who won Division Three but forfeited their promotion because their second team could not go up to Division One.

Second-placed Leigh II could not go up instead as their first team were relegated from Division One.

Westcliff Hard III's relegation from Division Four meant their fourth team were relegated alongside Kent Elms IV to Division Six, with champions Kent Elms V and Leigh IV going up to Division Five.
