Southend hosts huge Judo event
NEARLY 300 people have attended the biggest judo competition ever seen in Southend.
The event, which was sponsored by Buildbase and run by Southend Judo Club, attracted competitors from all over southern England
"Even though members of our club have helped run many events all over the UK, this was a first for the town and the club," said chairman John Horrigan.
"Spectators were queuing for up to an hour before the doors opened at 8.45am, even though the fights were not planned to start until 10am.
"Right from the first fight the crowd were on their feet screaming support for the fighters and with nearly 100 fights on the day they continued screaming to nearly 4pm."
One of the most spectacular fights and throws of the day was by Southend Judo Club member Callum Roberts.
Within just a few seconds of the start, Roberts gripped his opponent by the jacket and launched him straight over his head with a textbook throw, his opponent landing flat on his back with a resounding thud.
The move was met with resounding applause from coaches and audience alike.
Southend's deputy mayor, councillor Gwen Horrigan watched the action before she presented medals to the day's best competitors.
