FORMER Southend United player Ronnie Pountney believes the Roots Hall roar can help the Shrimpers record a first leg lead over Doncaster Rovers tonight.

The popular ex-midfielder, who made 403 appearances during 10 seasons with the club, is hoping to be at tonight's match.

And he is urging the fans to get right behind Steve Tilson's side.

"Friday night games have always been special at Roots Hall and I'm sure this will be no different," said Pountney, who is the only ever Southend player to win the club's player of the season award three times.

"I always used to love playing in them because there always seemed to be a better atmosphere.

"I'm sure the fans will make it the same tonight and I really do believe it will help Southend win the game."

Pountney, who still lives in Eastwood and works as a painter and decorator, played for Blues between 1975 and 1985 and can often be seen watching the current side from the stands.

"I go along with my son and we've been a few times this season which have always been enjoyable," said the 53-year-old.

"They had a bit of an iffy spell in the middle of the year and I wasn't sure they were going to make it to the play-offs, but credit to Tilly because he's done an excellent job."

And Pountney also heaped praise on a quartet of Blues players who always catch his eye.

"Peter Clarke and Adam Barrett at the back are very good," he said.

"Plus the two ahead of them, Nicky Bailey and Alan McCormack, are excellent as well. They are workaholics in the midfield and always impress me.

"If you're being honest they may still need another striker but they're a good team and one I obviously hope goes on to win promotion."

But Pountney is urging the team to maintain their concentration as they strive to secure an immediate return to the Championship.

"There are so many late goals these days and they're often decisive," he warned.

"Southend have to be wary of that and focus for the full 90 minutes.

"The away leg in particular will be very hard, but Southend can always sneak a goal and that could prove crucial."
