Polish translator breaks Southend Council language barrier

SOUTHEND Council has employed a Polish translator to help immigrants claim benefits.
The council started the trial programme because Polish is now the second most common language spoken in the town after English.
Translator Jadzia Haughton, from Westcliff, has helped scores of Polish speaking people translate forms for housing benefits and housing list applications.
But she also helps them with other problems, such as what to do with parking tickets and filling out applications for provisional driving licences.
Mrs Haughton, 51, says she has been seeing up to 15 people every Monday since the trial began in January.
She said: "Some of their problems are quite lengthy. This Monday there was a person who had lots of parking tickets and didn't know what to do with them.
"Most of them are housing benefit inquiries, but some are for schools. A lot of the time people come in with a letter and they do not know what it says, so it is a case of translating it.
"There have been a few pregnancies and people don't know what they are entitled to, which something else I have been helping with.
"Those who have been in England for a long time have already picked up quite a bit of English.
"But it is still not easy to fill in some of these forms, even if you are English."
Mrs Haughton also runs a Polish school for 80 children on Saturdays.
Southend Council said the service was set up to meet growing demand for Polish language translation.
Nick Corrigan, head of customer services, said: "The council is committed to delivering equality of access to public services.
"Recent investigation into the languages most commonly spoken in schools, requested through the council's telephony interpreting service and evidenced by South Essex Homes's tenant profile, indicated Polish is second only to English now in the borough."
This pilot service currently offers help and support on a wide variety of council inquiries, including help with bills, application forms, letters, doctor's appointments and school admission queries.
Southend Council is not the only public authority to offer other language services.
Southend Hospital said it could also provide literature in a wide range of languages, including Polish.
Hospital spokeswoman Pat Stone added: "We also subscribe to an interpretation service for non-English speakers requiring it."

I'm sorry but if they come to our country and can not speak the language, what contribution are they making to this system they are all milking...and now council tax payers are having to pay the salary of a translator. Sorry this takes the mickey!

That's a really funny piece of fiction.
What? It's real and not a joke?
I'll be remembering this at the next election.
No other country lays on translation services. You learn the language or you struggle.
We are just the ultimate mugs.

how disgusting your article on a polish translator employed to help polish immigrants claim benefits! These people should not be allowed to claim money. Its easy to see why this country is going to the dogs

I agree with Susan - it's an insult. They need help with parking tickets - yet they managed to buy a car. Help with housing benefit enquiries which having made no contribution to this country they should not be entitles to. Where is the same service offered for non-Polish speaking citizens? What commitment are they asked to make to contribute once we have given them everything they want so that they can enjoy a lifestyle some British people only dream of?!

We should deffinately help people, as a good civilised nation should. However there does need to be a balance here. Many people whether rightly or wrongly that they are missing out and being taken advantage of by both local and national government tax, which they then feel is used for scheme to help those who have a lesser right to make claims against the system to which they have put so, so, so much under New Labour into.
We should strive to be better than "other countries" who do not offer help, but again this should not be at the cost to those who barely have anything as it it. We do not need a sign that says full on our borders, but we do need to consider the impact that mass migration is having on resources. If you want to come here and and work and pay the same tax as we do (already that should be enough to put most off) then people are welcome aslong as they are good honest people. Again though witht he recent budget when pensioners are now going to struggle with what looks set to be another 10% or £105 added to the average household utility bills, we need to make sure tax revenue is equally shared with the most needy case first. It is a shame that we are having to look abroad to fill jobs, many towns in the UK have advertised jobs for months with no applicants, ie bus drivers, so these towns have either a choice, cut services or import labour? We should really make sure that people that can work are not forced, but helped firmly into a job. Many people would only be £18 better off employed than on benefits, mainy people would be virtually immidiately homeless should they find employment. That should not be the case that it's not in yopur interest to work or blocks are in the way. So welcome to Britain everyone and good luck with fattening Gordon Browns purse, oh wait he is not the chancellor any more? Is he? lol

I have lived in France for over 4 years, translators supplied forget it, health cover supplied forget it as from 23/11/2007. If I want a translator I have to find one and pay for it, you might be lucky and find an English speaking French person.
When are my countrymen going to wake up? Or is it now the country people deserve.

Learn the language if you want to contribute to the country, if not leave! Here in Belgium if you want to live in a council house you have to prove you can speak the language. How can you get a job if you can't speak the language, you can't.

Great at least they actually work and work very hard Poles have done for years!!
What we actually need is translators who go onto some of our council estates and try to speak the language of some of our 'benefit scroungers' like 'Why is it all the Poles come here and find work yet you havn't for years and you have 6 kids and free housing'

Schraube has a point - the Poles come here to work, not to sit on their backsides and post ignorant comments online. And as EU citizens, they're entitled to certain benefits too, so if they need assistance whilst they look for work, then they get what they're legally entitled to - is that really a problem? "Cannot speak the language"? Those that can't at present will make the effort or will soon realise they're going nowhere. As for employing Mrs. Haughton, Southend Council is doing the right thing here by helping the newcomers integrate.
Still not happy? Let's put the boot on the other foot; what do all you 'antis' think of the thousands of Brits who have moved to eastern Spain and other more attractive parts of the EU to work or retire? Most don't speak the language, have no idea about the culture & have never paid one euro towards the Spanish health service. Is this also "disgusting", "an insult"? Should the UK pensioners all be herded back over here? Of course not.

In France if you are retired from the UK you get a E121 from the uk, give it to the French Health system and the UK pays a set amount every year for your health care in France. After all most of us worked for years in the UK.
There is no free health care for the brits or anybody else now in France or Spain now I think.
I am not anti Polish or anybody else but you brits make it so easy for immigrants that is why they are still trying to get to England every night.

They say there is no black or white - there is always something in the middle ;-)
1. It is not fair for someone who came just yesterday to England to claim benefits- I agree - but guess what - they can not. According to the law - you have to work at least a year to claim some benefits - I am talking about a situation when you loose your job and need some money to get by for few weeks. The other benefit is child benefit - here you get what??? L18 a week for baby formula...wow! ARE THOSE POLES TAKING FROM You? :-)
-The tax credits -AGAIN you can get only if you have been employed before for quite some time. So, there is not to much of a free lunch - is it?
2. Now. I am a US citizen and have no right to claim anything from your government...But, check this out. My observations are as follows: I live in a building with 3 other families 2 polish, and British. So, the Poles are really nice people - they speak English OK, one of the ladies is a hairdresser - she believe it or not does not speak English well but works!!!. She gets by somehow. She is going to shool starting next year...The one British family downstairs - IT IS A NIGHTMARE. I have never had neighbors like them. Drinking, fights, drugs - none of them work. As far as I know -claiming benefits for years. And your country and you - pay for their beer, and my sleepless nights.
3. Hmm... telling you guys the truth - US would not be what it is if not for the immigrants. This is what made us SO strong. And let me think how many English man work for my company in NYC... many.
You are not US and I understand, but the reality is that world is going into the migration direction. People travel, settle in different countries...That is the way it is. There are good people and bad ones in every nation. Plus, do not worry - your government is not stupid - they won't let some Poles steal from you ;-) And as far as I know, there are many hardworking people who are polish - who find work with their poor language. Plus many of them working for years not claiming any benefits :-) So, relax.
I would be concern about the illegal immigration - I think that is a problem. Many illegal can not find jobs - so what do they do to get money....

Currently our government is not leading the way in Europe, but being dictated by the rest of the EU to the detrement of the UK.
What the hell are we thinking of by putting up Polish signs in wales?
Anyway Polish may be the second most popular language in Southend, but it will be Bulgarian soon:) I am off to brush up my Bulgarian...........

Two things come to my mind.
1. The swindling bosses that hog the money of the British people just love cheap labour.
2. The idle youngsters that appear to be actively encouraged not to work but to live for drugs and make the rest of the population suffer accordingly.
This is mainly due to past more rightwing governments but surely the trend could be reversed.... couldn't it?

Should the UK pensioners all be herded back over here? Of course not.

"Cannot speak the language"? Those that can't at present will make the effort or will soon realise they're going nowhere. As for employing Mrs. Haughton, Southend Council is doing the right thing here by helping the newcomers integrate.

So, a few Polish people want a better life in a country they fought for in WW2, and supported in WW1 and have had a close relationship with for 200 years. Big deal. They want to work.
I would be more concerned about the scum here in parts of Southchurch who vandalise every weekend, vomit in front gardens and fight on weekends and curse in the street. I pay for those scum.Lets export them from Cluny Square to anywhere and import the Polish to replace them.

Polish immigrants given benefits??? What a f****ng joke. You bunch at the council are nothing but do-gooding w***ers looking after their own careers. What next.....school buses for travellers ? ha!
Regarding your last question, this has been happening, at your expense, for years.
And these buses run practically empty on the occasions when some of these people can't be assed to get out of bed and get their children on board.
So you often see a 20 seater bus with only two children on board. Dear oh dear, won't that offend the Global Warming Police:?
Come on peeps, you know what to do. The next election is on May 1st. Vote in anybody except the main three parties because the only difference between the three of them is the colour of their rosettes.

Reading all these comments and Denises 4 times I feel as though the majority in this Country THAT WORK have had it with all the drink/drug addicts the work shy layabouts and Criminal types that frequent Southend causing misery for law abidding families,I am sick to death with everyone complaining about prison sentences or ANY other form of deterrent. Nothing we currently have works WHY simple just look around Southend and see all the p115 heads and scroungers!!
Why not give us the BENEFIT PAYERS the choice of saying 'I DO NOT WANT TO PAY ANYMORE' for the crap!
I appreciate we can say that but actually doing it means serving time insid with all the crap!!
I would rather have Poles as neighbours than all the Parasite Benefit scrounging brain dead.

how disgusting your article on a polish translator employed to help polish immigrants claim benefits! These people should not be allowed to claim money. Its easy to see why this country is going to the dogs
You are wrong.
As long as they do ONE HOUR of work - they can claim - Housing Benefit, Council tax benefit, child benefit, tax credits etc etc etc.
Once they have worked for 1 year and 1 day they can claim income support, job seekers allowance and any other social security benefit.
Once they have lived here 1 year and 1 day they can claim residency and British citizenship - and then access to council housing.

What a great idea to provide language help for tax payers not able to communicate in English! It saves so much time and money.
