Updated: Huge blaze in Pitsea
 |
| The blaze in Pitsea. |
ABOUT £1million damage was caused after a blaze gutted three houses in Pitsea.
Eyewitnesses reported plumes of smoke and flames coming from the properties in Vermont Close, Felmores, Pitsea.
The fire and rescue service has revealed the blaze started by an electrical fault, ruling out an arson attack.
No families were in the three houses, which had first floor and roof areas well alight when firefighters arrived.
Crews used an aerial monitor and jets to tackle the fire.
Assistant divisional officer Martin Powell, the fire investigation officer for the incident remains on site working alongside police scenes of crime officers.
He said: "There must be more than £1m worth of damage here - four houses have been totally destroyed in what appears to have been a crime related incident.
"The fire started in one house and spread to three others - no-one was home at the time, except a few family pets that were rescued by firefighters.
"The home owners returned to find their houses completely destroyed and they are now homeless.
There were no casualties reported.
Police were called to handle traffic and spectators.
Around 60 people gathered at the scene, watching nine fire engines tackle the flames.
Eyewitness Laura Shave, 30, from Great Ranton, said: "I was really shocked.
"I feel so sorry for the families. The flames were really high, about 20 feet in the air.
2At first I thought I hope its not my house."
According to onlookers two dogs were rescued from inside the houses.
One onlooker, Dan Rodgers, 28, from Ray-leigh, was driving past at the time and was one of the first on the scene.
He said: "I was driving up Lanhams and thought there was a bonfire, but as I got closer I saw flames.
"They were small to begin with, but soon they were 20 to 30ft high. You could see all the masonry falling down and then the whole roof of one of the properties gradually caved in. There was thick smoke so I knew it was pretty bad.
"The firefighters had a big job on their hands but they looked like they had it under control."
Another bystander, Laura Shave, 30, of nearby Great Ranton, said: "I was really shocked. I feel so sorry for the families. The flames were really high, about 20ft in the air."
Christine Mathie, 50, also of Great Ranton, described seeing a woman being taken away by firefighters.
"She looked really upset," she added.

I was there shortly after the fire brigade and was astounded to find that with all the fire equipment, they could not get water onto the houses to dowse the flames. It took a good 20 minutes before water flow was established but the wind had fanned the flames and taken out a large piece of roof on all three properties by then. The fireman looked on frustrated! I think lessons need to be learned - it seems the nearest fire hydrant was out in Riffams Drive out on the main road. My heart goes out to the people who lost their homes, belongings and memories.

this was a great shock to come home from work to find the fire only 2 doors away from our house were lucky due to the garages stop it reaching our house our thoughts are with those who lost their homes it scary when its this close to home but all credit to the firefighters who have just left at 10.30pm after making sure all is safe

Apologies for first comments! I was angry watching the men TRYING to do their job. They do a great job and keep us safe, but the location of fire hydrants is, I assume done by the Council. I felt for those men trying to find water to tackle the flames. So sorry it ended so miserably.

I came home from an after school club, at about 5pm, to see heavy black smoke coming from my estate, quite close to my home. As I drew nearer I was glad at the fact that it was not my own home, but still felt the horror from watching the height of the flames. thankfully there was no-one home at the time so there was no real casualties, but I know that road and the houses along there are rather plush and I can totally agree with the fact of over £1million worth of damage. When I came home, later at about 11pm, there were still firefighters and police, although the crowds had dimmed to about 10. My blessings to the families who reside there, I hope they get back on their feet soon and wish them luck in finding a new home.

cant believe people are going thru all the stress of loosing houses and personal belongings , AND then you get really nice people who want to put them down by saying their houses are not worth anything , NICE . lets hope you dont have to exprience anything like it in ya posh little houses in southend , cause thats another really nice area in essex , maybe you should just give a little thought to those people that have just lost a house .

I totally agree with the last comment. Fireman Sam, that was a really unsensative thing to say. Does it matter what the cost of the damage was? People are homeless! They have lost personal things, such as photos that they will never be able to get back, no matter how much money they have. some people are so selfish and stuck up!

There always has 2 b some1 like Sam doesn't there!? However,he is in the minority and obviously lives a very sad life! I agree with the rest of the caring, concerned people-£1million is a good estimate of damage but sentimental value cannot be valued. The people who have lost there homes here were hard working & great neighbours. Back off Sam!!

I completely agree, we live in 1 of the nicer parts of Basildon, how u can talk Kerry is beyond me, Roodegate is not a patch on our area.
Seeing our neighbours houses like that is heart-breaking, as said before, it's the things that are non-replaceable that really matter and to of lost it all is such a shame.
My heart goes out to everyone affected and, as Deny said, if there is anything we can do, pleae let us know.

[bold]In the defence of the comment by kerry, i believe she was making a statement the approached the poor standard of grammer used in the comments boxes. I am sure that there was no evil in her thoughts and sure that she has great sympathy for the people involved in such a tragedy.
I hope that the occupiers of these burnt houses have found other accomodations. They may struggle to get help from the council though as most of their homes are reserved for the immagrants that have flooded our great nation.
Still, as they are all here now, i'm sure there are plenty of empty homes in Poland going begging...Meow![/bold]

I reckon you must be on job seekers, as no one surely is stupid enough to employ you

[italic][bold]It appears that a debate has arisen regarding the grammer in the comments boxes. The idea of these boxes is that people can express themselves in their own way about the items of news. If a comment is not legible, then please ignore the comment.
Some people are unable to spell correctly, but still have the freedom to try. Peoples lives have been turned upside down because of this fire disaster and we should all feel lucky it has not happened to us.
Now in the words of Thumpers father "if you can't say nothing nice, then don't say nothing at all".
Now go back to the playground and play nicely children...[/bold][/italic]

Yes my spelling and grammar are rubbish, but so what.
Can we all please get off this subject and get back to the subject of the poor people who have no homes.

Who cares about spelling mistakes, sometimes these are made by typing too quickly. The POINT of this, is that people have lost their homes and all their belongings. If 4 houses have been destroyed the cost of replacing them and all goods inside will be as high as quoted.
All comments on this site should just be to offer the victims sympathy, and not argue about how much these houses/belongings are worth or about spelling mistakes. Please be more sympathetic to these poor people.

Yes, most of these inane comments here are not to be believed. It is I am afraid, just an attempt to bring focus to the people that lived in these houses and focus away from those who think that the money is important or how posh someones house is or isn't. Gladly, most people focused on the victims here. Incidntally, do you think those poor people will be sitting at computers reading our sort of rubbish? It does not matter about the value or wether the houses were private or council, point is four families have lost everything , their treasured memories and things close to their hearts and that is priceless the only positive thing is that nobody was hurt and their pets were saved and i really feel for these people and just hope that all their friends and family rally round them because right now after its sunk in they will need them.

All those long legal documents require a keen eye Kim. I hope you have an excellent clerk working for you. There are some excellent clerks at Lincoln's Inn and the Temple, as I remember.
As for grammar, spelling and punctuation; our language is the only thing we have left of our culture now this government and the EU have robbed us of everything else, so let's hold onto it.
However, I do not think that people should be personally attacked and called stupid just because of it. I believe liberal leftwing teaching techniques over the last 30 years have eroded our education system and produced a lot of young people who have been denied the beauty of their indigenous language.
This is not their fault.
It is not their fault that their school work went uncorrected by teachers. This is the fault of the Politically Correct Brigade whose idiotic idealogy states that mistakes mustn't be corrected in case it upsets the student.
I know some teachers ignore this inadequate and ridiculous method but a lot of them uphold it.
However, it must be said that documents - particularly legal ones - can be totally misinterpreted just by one piece of punctuation being misplaced.
In Lynn Truss's book, Eats Shoots and Leaves, she mentions a very sensitive government document almost causing a war because of an errant apostrophe. I think this is the worst annoyance of all. Misplaced apostrophes alter the meanings of words and whole sentences if unchecked.
So while I agree it may SEEM unimportant to maintain a good standard of English, there are numerous reasons why we should demand that English language, culture and history should return to the standards we were admired for many years ago.
The young people of this country have been sold down the river and robbed of their birthright.
With regard to the residents of the burnt houses, I hope that Basildon Council will see to it that these GENUINELY homeless people are rehoused without delay.
