Green campaigners against Basildon waste plan

GREEN campaigners are calling on people to make their views on the future of waste clear to council chiefs.

Members of Essex Friends of the Earth protested outside the Eastgate shopping centre, in Basildon, where Essex County Council has been conducting a public consultation into how it disposes of people's rubbish.

The group claims the consultation is flawed because it does not tell people about the huge mechanical biological treatment plant, with small-scale incineration, planned for Courtauld Road in Basildon.

Paula Whitney, waste co-ordinator for the group, said: "The questionnaire is very airy-fairy about what mechanical biological treatment is and the implications.

"Burning fuel pellets from dried rubbish plants is more expensive and just as polluting as massburn incineration, creating toxic gases and toxic ash.

"We ask people to tick the box strongly disagree' to the process in question three on the consultation."

The county council is currently making a third bid to the Government for the £90million needed to set up two of the plants in Essex.

However rubbish is disposed of, there can be no increase in cost to the council tax payer, and no reduction in the number of collections.
The level of council tax, even in a Conservative area is now unsustainable, and increasing costs is not an option.
