Man persuaded not to jump from multi-storey car park
A MAN has been talked down from jumping off a multi-storey car park.
The man was spotted on one of the higher levels of the Victoria Plaza car park in Southend about 9.40am this morning (Tuesday).
Police sealed off the area around Chichester Road near the car park until 10.50am when they persuaded him to come down.

Why did they need to talk him down? I thought jumping was no longer possible...

Why is the car park not fenced off? It would appear that the very top floor of the car park has some sort of boundary fencing around it to prevent people from jumping but there are no prevention barriers on lower floors to deter people from jumping from the next floor down or even the one below that. A lot of money has been spent on creating a new-look Victoria Plaza, why has the car-park been overlooked, surely some of the money could have been spent making the multi-storey car park a safer place as well, in order to prevent people from attempting to do silly things like this.

From the very top now - they can still clamber over the lower levels - looks like they will have to secure the entire building now.
If somebody wants to kill themselves they will just go and do it.
If it is a cry for help then they will do what this man did.

Whats the problem? It would have been one less pillock walking round Southend!!! This proves that our council never solves a problem completely, just half-heartedly.

Should have let him get on with it, one less 3 hour delay on the rail network, which is where he'll go now.

You don't know the reasons behind why this man felt so desperate as to put himself in that situation, say he has recently lost his wife, or his job, and cannot cope? Your comments wouldn't be so appropriate then would they!

Idiot makes a good point though. Why do we need fences and REALLY obvious signage (like LONG DROP at the edge of a cliff) to stop stupid people from doing stupid things all the time?
People will always find places to jump from or methods to top themselves.
Sounds like it was a cry for help anyway so no harm done in the end.

As always there are a few sickos on here who i.m.o need desperate help. How anyone can write some of these things is beyond comprehension! Let's hope nothing like this ever happens to someone you know because it could. Deep Depression could happen to anyone and at anytime. Please think b4 posting! All the very best to the man concerned.

[bold]We should get rid of all warning signs and safety measures in every walk of life.
In a few decades time the 'stupid gene' would be gone from the gene pool and we would all be able to get on with our lives without having to put up with constant restrictions because idiots think its ok to walk on the railway or play on the motorway.
A for this man, we don't know his mental state or his circumstances. I hope he makes a full recovery from the low point he found himself at that prompted this action.[/bold]

This was a cry for help.
I hope the guy is getting it.
If someone is going to commit suicide they will do it quietly and alone. Their mind has been made up and nothing will change it.

Theres always other car parks as well that don't have fences; Farringdon? Royals? Maybe fences should be put here as well?

[bold][italic]Least he's proved a point now, the whole car park needs enclosures round all levels! The fence right up top is just to protect the glass roof, blood and guts would make a nasty mess on there!!![/italic] [/bold]

AND YOU CALL YOURSELF A DR????? Just out of interest - what surgery do you work at? (so I can avoid it)
