Boat wrecked by island blaze
 |
| Up in smoke - firefighters tackle the fire in an abandoned boat Picture: Echo reader Graeme Sweeney |
AN abandoned boat on Two Tree Island, Leigh, was destroyed by fire.
Eyewitnesses reported 6ft flames and black smoke billowing into the air as the fibreglass in the boat burned on Sunday at 2.25pm.
The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
Firefighters said people had been throwing rubbish into the boat, which may have caught fire due to the heat.

"People had been throwing rubbish into the boat" - if that rubbish had included glass bottles then the glass can act as a magnifying-glass, magnifying strong sunlight and a fire can start. This has happened before, on moorland or in woodland, and I believe bush fires in Australia have been caused the same way.
This is sad, because it's only a couple of weeks ago that the 'Echo' reported a mass clean-up of rubbish by volunteers on Two Tree Island, which is a nature reserve.

I agree with you Margaret....sadly I believe that first and foremost people don't think and have minimal common sense - secondly, even if they did have the sense to realise the possible outcome of their actions regarding unwise disposal of rubbish, they just don't give a sh*t anyway. If the boat was abandoned, who cares if it burned? The fire dept can look at it as a valuable traing exercise.

Well, i suppose it is better they throw their rubbish into an abandoned boat than throw it all over the reserve.
