Recycle your waste or pay the penalty

RESIDENTS on Craylands will be the next in the district to face fines if they fail to recycle.

Basildon Council is extending the system next month following a successful pilot in Ghyllgrove, Basildon.

More than 900 homes on Craylands will be added to the scheme.

Figures reveal recycling rates have risen sharply in Ghyllgrove with the amount of recyclable waste picked up on each collection increasing from eight to 11 tonnes.

Stephen Hillier, councillor in charge of environment, said: "The scheme has already proved a success in Ghyllgrove where recycling rates have risen dramatically without any fines being issued so far.

"We hope residents on Craylands respond in the same way to help boost recycling and cut landfill waste."

No one was fined in Ghyllgrove, but several warnings were issued.

Letters informing residents of the move are being delivered to homes across Craylands.

Environmental enforcement officers will carry out patrols to check households are taking part in recycling from June. This will cover houses on Craylands but not flats.

Those who fail to recycle correctly will, on the first occasion, be given further information on how they can recycle. A formal warning will be given on the second occasion followed by a fine of £75 if they fail to recycle a third time within six months.

However, Mr Hillier said the emphasis remained firmly on educating, and not punishing, residents.

"We use a three-strikes-and-you're fined policy, that only affects the most persistent and stubborn non recyclers."

The scheme will eventually go district wide.

Residents will be expected to place plastic bottles, yoghurt pots, margarine and butter tubs, punnet tubs, plastic meat and cake trays, food and drinks cans, newspapers, magazines and directories, cardboard and aerosol cans in pink sacks and glass in their recycling box.

Residents will be expected to place, etc., so how can they be fined if it is NOT a law?

What a joke! I am sick of lies & propoganda about recycling/global warming.

This country produces less than 1% of world pollution & most pollution this country produces causes occurs naturally, eg animals, etc.

We all know we cannot believe a single thing any councillor or government say & we all know the labour government were billions in the black when they first came into power & they are now billions into the red, wasting money left right & centre & STEALING this country's pensions - lying through ttheir inept teeth all the way.

They are now desparate for money & this is yet another wy to fine/tax people.

If I see a council worker looking throught my bins (they obviously have nothing better to do), all I can say is that they will be very sorry.

BRING ON THE REVOLUTION!!!!

no wonder the powers that be are running with teh global warming thing what great opportunities for taxation alraedy seen airline fees go up enough to stop people flying? of course not that would be self defeating enough to raise more revenue though green taxes green light to flog the public ever more increse in fuel costs? need to protect the environment will be the answer

just imagine if the green party were in power aaaarrrggghhh!!!

"Residents will be expected to place plastic bottles, yoghurt pots, margarine and butter tubs, punnet tubs, plastic meat and cake trays, food and drinks cans, newspapers, magazines and directories, cardboard and aerosol cans in pink sacks and glass in their recycling box."

I would be delighted to have somewhere to place yogurt pots, plastic containers and cardboard. Those of us who live in Rochford have nowhere to put these, except into the main bin, from where it all goes to landfill.

Plastic containers which are 'bottle-shaped' are supposed to go into the 'bring bins' in car parks etc. Any other plastic including food containers, if it's not bottle-shaped there is nowhere provided.

I have resorted to taking plastic containers to the new shredding facility at Tesco, Prince Avenue. This isn't very 'green', however - it costs petrol and causes emissions just to get there.

What to do with cardboard e.g. cereal packets? I tend to save them up in the shed, and we take a lot of them together to Rayleigh tip. I'd be delighted to have them collected from the kerbside - this was meant to be happening this summer but now, we're told, the scheme with the new contractor, Sita, has been put on hold for the 'foreseeable future'.

I would just love to have all these things collected from the front of our house!

Maybe if Essex didn't accept rubbish from London our landfill sites wouldn't be filling up so fast. Why is London rubbish our problem?
Posted by: Essexgirl, essex on 3:04pm Fri 16 May 08
Just because we don't put recycling out for the rubbish collection doesn't mean that I DON'T recycle. Every other week I go to Tesco's and recycle all my plastics and glass there, so why should I be fined with this???

In the end people will start stealing other peoples recycling so they don't get fined!!

I have had enough of this country and the ridiculous ideas the government come out with, no wonder so many people are immigrating ... they have seen the light!!!

I think that they will only fine you if you have recyclable material in your black sack. You won't be prosecuted for not putting a pink sack out

Yes, we in Ghyllgrove were accused of being the worst recyclers on the planet, and if proof were ever needed we went from 8 tonnes to 11! Sounds like they spend all their time weighing our bags! Only thing is, with this lying council, when and how much will the cost per bag charge be? Like the free resident parking (now £25 for having nowhere to park)just wait and see! Bet you we will pay dear for this green planet!

Great news. Anything to enforce the lazy slobs who leech off society and wont do anything to help the planet in to taking a responsibilty for their own garbage footprint. Why should the rest of society support the ponces who cant be bothered to clear up after themselves!

I take it you mean our council, especially the last sentence of your comment!

So presumably you are also referring to the 95 year old partially blind war veteran who, this week had his refuse services withdrawn for putting a bottle in the wrong bin.

OK so it wasn't Basildon but this and many other examples show just how ludicrous this situation has become.

I fully agree that we should recycle. Common sense dictates, never mind global warming - but to fine people £120 for leaving their bin lids slightly open and prosecute the mother of the toddler who dropped a small piece of sausage roll on the pavement is outrageous.

This is another excuse for the garbage fascists and the stealth tax brigade to misapproriate the money of people who make genuine mistakes.

And that public money should be wasted on pointless prosecutions when there are far worse offenders like big companies whose overblown packaging adorns most trees at the side of the A127, is a travesty.

Furthermore, Rochford council, after several weeks of me pestering them to take my rubbish, delivered a bin and a recycling box to my property.

The following day they came and took both back telling me that as I was on private land, I was "not entitled" to a bin or recycling facilities.

The real truth is, half the time they cannot even be bothered to collect my rubbish because it means them making a slight detour.

The other half of the time they only collect half of it and leave the rest for the foxes to plunder.

In fact, they just do what they hell they like when they feel like it.

Which brings me to Paul's comment which presumably refers to Basildon Council itself as suggested by Devil's Advocate, or another sector of the community that dumps stuff where and when they like, including roads and country lanes.

Have you seen the aerial photos lately?

What global warming would that be? The warming that has not happened since 1998:

http://news.bbc.co.u
k/1/hi/sci/tech/7329
799.stm

or the warming that is not projected to occur for at least another ten years:

http://news.bbc.co.u
k/1/hi/sci/tech/7376
301.stm

The fact is that 'global warming is hogwash, and is just being used to increase taxation. Yes, the climate is changing, but it is simply part of Earth's natural climate cycle, it has nothing at all to do with the activities of mankind.

Basildon District Council are actually breaking the law if they fine anyone for not recycling.

Under The English Bill of Rights Act 1689;

'That all grants and promises of fines and forfeitures of particular persons before conviction are illegal and void.'

Let's hope once the first fines are issued Cllr. Hiller get's arrested for breaking the rights of all English men and women.

Yes it has, Carbon is being added to the atmosphere due to our consumption of fossil fuels.

There are 3 types of carbon isotopes in the atmosphere C12, C13, and C14, C14 is radiated by cosmic rays it is easily measurable and has a life of around 5000 years.

So all the C14 in the ground has long since irradiated, plant life takes atmospheric Carbon from the atmophere and prefers the more stable isotope of C12.

We can measure the diminishing levels of C13 and C14 in the atmosphere as well as the increasing levels of C12.

The fact hat C12 is dominant proves that carbon in the atmosphere is increasing due to mans use of Fossil Fuels from deep within the ground.

So do us all a favour and put your recyclables in pink sacks, walk more drive less, in fact stay at home and read up on climate change before you spout nonsense!

Maybe you should read a bit more. Atmospheric CO2 levels only increase several hundred years AFTER temperature increase. Increased atmospheric CO2 is a symptom of warming, not a cause.

The FACT that global mean temperatures have NOT increased since 1998, shows the LIE of anthropogenic climate change.

The green ecomentalists have been deliberately misrepresenting the data for some time now. Read the article at the following URL (and als those in my previous post:

m/article/SB11528382

ml?KEYWORDS=hockey%2

So do us all a favour, get off your neighbour's computer (it can't possibly be yours because it uses electricity, which according to you and your cult will destroy the world, and that would make you a hypocrite), go back to your cave and boil yourself a nice cup of acorns.

I'm going out for a drive in my diesel then I'm coming home and switching all my non-energy saving lights on, just for the hell of it.

Its is hogwash 7 this thick majority in this country just swallow it

c02 may play a tiny role at best in climate change

however, the fact is that the climate has always changed & always will change & we are being taxed to death because the climate is naturally changing - WHICH NO-ONE CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT!!

there were no human c02 emmissions before the ice age
