In favour shop workers Tonia Mayo, Aaron Barham, Abi Lepin and Jack O'Callaghan welcome plans for linking Tesco with the main centre of Pitsea

TRADERS have welcomed plans to develop wasteland linking Pitsea's Tesco Extra to the main town.

The plans, drawn up by housing association Genesis Homes, could see new shops and flats built on the currently rat-infested land between Tesco Extra and Station Lane.

Shop owners said the development would help regenerate Pitsea town centre and bring more people into the area.

Tonia Mayo, manager at Jeanette's Florist, in High Road, said: "I think the more development the better.

"It would bring more people from Tesco and it would be great for local businesses in the area.

"At the moment there is not really a lot to offer in Pitsea."

Steve Drake, manager of Need 2 Print, in High Road, said: "Everyone goes to Tesco and parks in the car park.

"The supermarket has taken over the area and the small businesses have suffered. I think the idea of linking the town with Tesco would be good. If people could get to us more easily then it would help us."

The proposal is part of Basildon Council's Pitsea masterplan.

Plans are also in the pipeline to improve Pitsea Market and extend the Dipple Medical Centre, in Wickford Avenue.

Azmy Farag, owner and manager of Hair Oasis, in High Road, thought the proposed development was a great idea.

He said: "More diverse shops will bring more people into the area, and make the town a lot bigger. There's always the fact that you could have businesses competing, but competition is good because it brings up standards.

"I welcome it and think it will be great for the town."

Genesis Homes is expected to officially reveal the plans within the next few weeks.
