Canvey Way crash appeal

POLICE want to speak to the driver of a lorry that was spotted at the scene of a fatal crash on Canvey Way in February.

David Smith, 61, of Gafzelle Drive, Canvey died at Southend Hospital last week sat may 10 from injuries sustained in the crash which happened at 4.30am on Friday February 29.

The road was closed for seven hours causing chaos for commuters after the silver Ford Fiesta Mr Smith was driving collided head on with a white Audi A3.

The driver of the Audi, a 29-year-old man also from Canvey, was treated at Basildon Hospital for serious leg injuries but later discharged.

Investigating officer PC Steve Catton said: "We have spoken to several witnesses and one recalls seeing a lorry driving along Canvey Way at the time and possibly through the debris that was lying on the road after the crash.

"We are looking to speak to this driver or anyone who can describe the lorry to us as we need to know how this collision happened."

The police are also still trying to trace members of Mr Smith's family.

Anyone with information about the crash should contact Rayleigh Road Policing Unit on 01268 798122.

Seems a bit late in the day to publish this detail.

Shouldn't it have been done soon after the accident?
