A NEW £143,000 outdoor sports area has officially opened, replacing tennis courts next to South Woodham Ferrers village hall, in Hullbridge Road.
It offers a multi-games area for ball games, a redeveloped playground and specialist equipment for disabled children, including a climbing frame and swings.
Town councillor Richard Weir-Ewing said: "The hard-court, originally a tennis court, had been abandoned and derelict for some years.
"We all hear about youths of a certain age hanging around with nowhere to go, who appear to be doing nothing.
"Along with the skateboard area in Compass Gardens this project provides another meeting place and social area to chill out and have some fun."
