GREAT Wakering Rovers midfielder Ryan Scougall ended months of injury frustration by scoring a fantastic match-winning free-kick against White Ensign tonight.

Scougall's stunning shot swerved high into the top right hand corner of the net from around 25 yards out to secure a 2-1 win for Marcus Bowers’ side.

And Scougall was delighted to see the ball hit the back of the net on his first game back having felt under added pressure to score.

“To be honest I fancy myself from free kicks usually, but when I’m just back from injury and the gaffer tells me to take it over the usual set piece takers it adds humongous pressure,” said Scougall.

“I’m just thankful I got the contact on the ball I wanted and once it left my boot I knew it had a serious chance.

“But, after another setback I was buzzing that it turned out to be the winner too.”

Scougall came off the bench to score the decisive goal of the game eight minutes from time against Wakering's tenants.

And he is pleased to be enjoying his football again after a nightmare period on the sidelines.

“From someone who never really picks up injuries, this year has been one to forget to be honest,” said the 26-year-old.

“I broke two bones in my face against Stanway at home in November which required an emergency operation and that ruled me out for three months.

“I then made a comeback and played two games until I needed to have my appendix out urgently.

“That ruled me out for another six weeks which was tough.”

However, Scougall is now looking to make up for lost time and was delighted to help Wakering get back to winning ways after two successive defeats.

“Getting the three points was the only objective tonight,” said Scougall.

“After a few bad results we needed a massive reaction in order to keep the promotion push alive.

“It wasn’t the prettiest of games from both sides but all it comes down to is who wants it most.

“Thankfully we dug deep and managed to secure the three points.”

Scougall’s free-kick came after a Callum Boylan penalty had cancelled out Mechack Asuka’s opener for Ensign.

And he is certain Rovers will now be desperate to pick up more points as they bid to end the season in the play-offs.

“To be honest this is one of the hungriest changing rooms I’ve been in for a long time and these boys don’t know their limits,” said Scougall.

“Yes we’ve had a couple bad results lately but all that does is motivate us even more to put things right and dig that little bit deeper in order to get the results we know we need and know we deserve.”

Sixth placed Wakering are now 10 points behind Sporting Bengal, who currently occupy the final play-off position, with three games in hand.
